How Voting Works

Every list on UpvoteRank is ordered by votes. Here’s what happens when you click.

Casting a vote

Each entry has a thumbs-up and a thumbs-down button. Click thumbs-up if you’d recommend it, thumbs-down if you wouldn’t. Click the same button again to take your vote back, or click the other one to change your mind. You don’t need an account, and we never ask for your email to vote.

How the order is calculated

Entries are ranked by their score: upvotes minus downvotes. If two entries have the same score, the one with more upvotes goes first. The ranking updates as soon as you vote, so what you see is always the current state of the list.

Votes are counted separately for each list. A product can appear in “Best Budget Earbuds” and “Best Earbuds for Running”, and it may rank very differently in each, because the question is different.

Keeping it honest

Without accounts, we use a few quiet safeguards instead:

  • Your browser gets a random ID so it can only vote once per entry. It’s not linked to your name or email.
  • The number of votes one network (a home or office connection) can give the same entry is limited, so one person can’t flood a list.
  • Obvious bots and scripted traffic are filtered out before they’re counted.
  • We never store your IP address in readable form. It’s turned into a one-way code that can’t be reversed.

No system without logins is perfect, but these make cheating slow and pointless, which is usually enough.

Trending lists

On the homepage, “This week” and “This month” show the lists that received the most votes in the last 7 and 30 days. It’s a good way to see what people are arguing about right now.

Common questions

Can a brand pay to rank higher?

No. Rankings come from votes only. See our editorial guidelines.

Why is my favorite missing?

Use “Suggest an item” at the bottom of any list. We review suggestions and add the ones that fit the list.

I voted, but the number didn’t change after I refreshed.

Pages are cached for speed, so the counter can take a moment to catch up. Your vote is saved as soon as the button turns green or red.
